Teams aren't accidental, they're built.

After coaching leaders and teams for many years, I’ve learned one vital truth: great teams aren’t accidental. They’re built.

Clear expectations, shared values, and real accountability are all necessary components for it to work.

Without these, confusion creeps in, priorities blur, and inconsistency takes over.

That’s why I always recommend defining your non-negotiables; the behaviours and attitudes that are essential for your team’s success.

Set firm boundaries so everyone knows where flexibility ends and accountability begins.

But it doesn’t stop there. You must communicate these expectations clearly and proactively. If your team is guessing the rules, your message isn’t clear enough.

Here are some signs clarity is missing:

- Inconsistent execution between departments
- Repeated conversations about the same issues
- Team members unsure about what matters most

Clarity drives alignment. It fuels efficiency. It builds trust.

If you want a truly high-performing team, start by defining and sharing your rules clearly.

What’s one rule you’ve found makes the biggest difference in your team’s success? I’d love to hear your insights.
